Willstrop Leads Late English Group Into Tournament of Champions
James Willstrop, the 19-year-old World Junior Champion from Yorkshire, led a
group of three Englishman who survived the qualifying finals of the $72,500
Harrisdirect Tournament of Champions to join eleven further Britons in the
first round of the first PSA Super Series event of the year in New York.
The teenager, who reached last week's British Nationals semi-finals against
the odds, beat Canada's Shahier Razik 15-8 13-15 15-8 13-15 15-9 - and now
meets Egypt's former world junior champion Karim Darwish in the first round.
Compatriot Adrian Grant, also based in Yorkshire, overcame fellow English
player Peter Genever 17-16 15-13 2-15 15-12 to earn a first round clash with
seventh-seeded Australian Anthony Ricketts. The third Englishman through was
Essex's Del Harris, whose reward for a 15-7 15-9 15-8 victory over Irishman
Liam Kenny is an opening round encounter with his Edgbaston Priory English
National League club team-mate Stewart Boswell, the fifth seed from Australia.
England's world No1 Peter Nicol is seeded to win the prestigious Tournament
of Champions title for the second time. He is expected to meet arch rival
and defending champion Jonathon Power in a repeat of the 2002 final at the
Grand Central Terminus in New York. Power, the 28-year-old world No2 from
Montreal in Canada has claimed the title four times and is bidding to make
his sixth successive appearance in the final.
