Galvez Survives Marathon All-Mexican Saskatoon Final
Final:
[1] Eric Galvez (MEX) bt [Q] Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira (MEX) 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6 (95m)
Eric Galvez beat fellow countryman Jorge Isaac Baltazar Ferreira in impressive style in a marathon all-Mexican final of the Saskatoon Boast Squash Open in Saskatchewan, Canada.
Top seed Galvez, from Puebla, and Ferreira, a qualifier, delighted the Saskatoon crowd with breathtaking drops from the back of the court and pounding returns - always counterpunching, always retrieving, and laughing with the crowd after getting yet another let call to extend the rallies.
The favourite looked tired in the second and fourth games but dug deep and found a burst of energy in the fifth to record his 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6 victory after 95 minutes.
"It was the best final seen in many years as often the players are beat up by Sunday and many finals have been one sided," said tournament organiser Daryl Foreman.
"These two Mexicans put everything they had into the match and the crowd truly appreciated the fine display of shot-making and especially the retrieving and grit."
The success marks the second PSA Tour title of the year for Galvez, and the fifth of his career.
