BRITISH OPEN SQUASH NEWS Organisers Extend British Open Qualifying Draw Organisers of the 2003 British Open Squash Championships, which will take place for the first time in Nottingham this autumn, have extended the men's qualifying draw to open the event to more players. Promoters John Beddington and John Nimick revealed last month that the 'Wimbledon of Squash' will be staged at the Albert Hall in Nottingham from 01-05 October, following qualifying rounds at Nottingham Squash Club. The men's qualifying draw, beginning on Sunday 28 September, will now accommodate 32 players fighting for four places in the main draw. "This is excellent news, which will ensure that players from more countries have the chance of making it through to the main rounds on the all-glass showcourt at Nottingham's Albert Hall," said Gawain Briars, Executive Director of the Professional Squash Association (PSA). Title-holder Peter Nicol, the world No1 from England, was delighted to hear the news that he will be able to defend his title this year in Nottingham: "The British Open is the premier event in world squash and it is brilliant that John Beddington and John Nimick have been able to ensure its survival this year at such short notice. Let's hope that the event, with its unique history in the sport, can soon establish a new long-term home for itself," added Nicol, who won his first British Open title in 1998. The 2003 British Open will feature 16-draw men's and women's events and a full programme of men's and women's Masters events. With a week still to go before entries close for the 2003 British Open, all of the top ten women in the world have already confirmed entry, together with the world's top three men - Peter Nicol; Australia's world champion David Palmer; and Scotland's Nottingham-based John White, the in-form world No3 who won the PSA Masters title in May and the English Open trophy earlier this month.
