Nicol Tested By Beachill In Super Series Finals Opener
World No1 Peter Nicol got his championship off to a winning start with a
hard-fought five-game victory over England team-mate and Commonwealth Games
gold medal-winning partner Lee Beachill on the opening night of the Brit
Insurance Super Series Squash Finals at London's Broadgate Arena.
Nicol, bidding to equal Jansher Khan's record of four Super Series Finals
titles, took the first two games, but then faced a fierce comeback from the
Yorkshireman who rallied to clinch the next two, taking the match into a
fifth and final game. The No1 seed, however, regained his composure to take
the last game and wrap up a 64-minute victory in a 15-11 15-12 8-15 5-15 15-7
scoreline - further extending his unbeaten run in 2003.
"That was hard work!" said Nicol afterwards. "After the fourth game I just
wanted to get off court and get focussed again."
In the other Fleet Group match, last year's runner-up Thierry Lincou, the No4
seed, defeated Scotland's Martin Heath in four games. After going down in
the opening game, the Frenchman picked up his game to secure a 10-15 15-10
15-13 15-6 victory in 70 minutes, getting his title challenge off to a
victorious, albeit nervous, start.
"I wasn't very confident today, I was a bit nervous," said world No6 Lincou.
"I have to get used to the court and the atmosphere and hopefully I'll play a
lot better."
Heath, a replacement for Australia's defending champion David Palmer, said:
"I'm pretty disappointed. I felt as though I was playing alright. I've now
got to win the next couple of matches to get through to the semis. I feel
that the way I'm playing I should be winning these kind of matches,"
explained the Toronto-based world No15.
In the Harrow Group, Canada's No2 seed Jonathon Power opened his Brit
Insurance Super Series Finals account with a 3-1 defeat of Ong Beng Hee. The
Malaysian, a late replacement for the injured Australian Stewart Boswell,
went down in the first game but fought back well to level the match at 1-1.
Power, the 2002 Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, then stepped up a gear to
take the final two games, completing a convincing 15-5 13-15 15-8 15-9
victory in 68 minutes.
There was a notable upset in the final match of the evening when Australia's
Anthony Ricketts overcame Scotland's No3 seed John White to sit alongside
Power at the top of the Harrow Group after the first day. In a pulsating
87-minute encounter, Ricketts twice came back from a game behind to claim a
14-17 15-12 9-15 15-7 15-11 victory.
