Mexicans Meet In Quito Climax
While a Canadian and Englishwoman will contest the women's final, the men's climax of the Quito Open Championships will be an all-Mexican affair at the El Condada club in the Ecuador capital.
Top seed Runa Reta, from Canada, and second seed Jenna Gates reached the women's final in contrasting styles: Reta despatched Mexico's eighth seed Sary Carmen Diaz 9-0 9-1 9-1 in just 21 minutes while Gates, from Sussex in England, lost the first game against Margriet Huisman, the third seed from the Netherlands, before winning 8-10 9-3 9-3 9-5 in 39 minutes to reach her maiden WISPA final.
In the men's event, 20-year-old third seed Jose Angel Becerril avenged his defeat by Bernardo Samper in last month's Colombian Open by beating the seventh seed from Colombia 8-11 11-4 11-7 11-10 in 58 minutes to reach his first PSA final.
Born in Mexico City, Becerril now faces compatriot Eric Galvez, the No2 seed who beat fellow Mexican Manuel Fregoso 11-7 11-5 11-8 in 31 minutes. It will be Galvez's second PSA final appearance in a month, and the sixth of his career.
