Beddoes Bursts Into European Junior Semi-Finals
England's Emma Beddoes caused the only upset in the quarter-finals of the
European Junior Squash Championships when she beat Belgium's 3/4 seed Charlie
de Rycke 9-7 9-2 3-9 3-9 9-6 to become one of three English players through
to the last four of the women's event in Parsdorf, Germany.
Beddoes, the 17-year-old former British U15 champion from Warwick who missed
out on selection for the England team which will compete later in the
European Junior Team Championships, now faces Spain's No2 seed Margaux Moros,
who beat Stacey Preece, from Wales, 9-0 9-5 9-3.
The other women's semi-final will be an all-English affair between England
team-mates Suzie Pierrepont and Lauren Siddall. Top-seeded Pierrepont, 18,
from Brighton, beat Spain's Stela Carbonell 9-4 9-4 9-2, while Siddall twice
had to come from behind to conquer Orla Noom, from the Netherlands, 5-9 9-5
4-9 9-3 9-1.
Local interest is focused on the men's event where Germany's 3/4 seed Patrick
Gassler beat England's Tom Richards 9-4 9-3 9-3 to earn a semi-final clash
with top seed Dylan Bennett, the Dutchman who beat Welshman Jethro Binns 9-2
9-2 9-7.
England's Laurence Delasaux, the No2 seed from Hull, ended unseeded Michael
Frilund's giant-killing run in the event in a 9-0 9-0 9-6 defeat over the
Dane. In the other men's semi-final, Delasaux meets France's Yann Perrin who
survived a close battle with German Tobias Bohm to win 10-8 10-8 9-3.
