While all four seeds progressed safely through the first round of the Kish Persian Gulf Cup in Iran, England's Nathan Lake became the only qualifier to make the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Challenger 10 squash event at Kish Sports Centre at Kish Island when he beat fellow countryman Reuben Phillips for the second time in 24 hours.
Lake, the European Junior champion from Cheltenham, despatched Phillips in straight games in the tournament's final qualifying round - then found he was paired up again with the 20-year-old Londoner when Phillips was handed a 'lucky loser' slot following the last-minute withdrawal of top seed Jan Koukal.
And a remarkable shock looked on the card when Phillips - who shares an identical ranking with his opponent - took the first game in the main draw match.
But 19-year-old Lake recovered to close out the match 11-13, 11-8, 11-3, 11-6 in 41 minutes to earn himself a quarter-final clash with second seed Mark Krajcsak.
The Hungarian number one saw off local hope Mohammad Sanaee, a qualifier, 11-4, 11-3, 11-6.
