US squash star Julian Illingworth provided unexpected hopes for domestic success in the KIG Open in Los Angeles when he ousted top-seeded Canadian Shahier Razik in the opening round of the PSA World Tour International 25 event in its second year at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The unseeded New Yorker, winner of a record six US national titles, clambered back from 2/1 down to upset Razik, the world No26 from Toronto, 11-6, 5-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4.
Illingworth, ranked 34 in the world, now faces England's Chris Simpson for a place in the last four. Simpson, the Guernsey-born world No43, defeated Frenchman Yann Perrin 11-6, 11-7, 11-1.
Tournament organiser Stefan Casteleyn showed that he has not lost the touch which took him to a world ranking high of 7 in 1999. The 37-year-old Belgian despatched New Zealander Campbell Grayson 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 to set up a quarter-final clash with Omar Abdel Aziz, the fourth seed from Egypt.
