Wales produced the biggest upset on the second day of qualifying action in the European Junior U19 Team Squash Championship by beating defending champions Germany in their final Pool D tie in the European Squash Federation event in the Austrian capital Vienna.
Fourth seeds Germany took the lead when team number one Rudi Rohrmuller, runner-up in the earlier individual European Junior championship, despatched Welshman David Haley in straight games.
But Sam Fenwick fought back to beat Philip Riedl 11-9, 11-4, 11-8 as Wales, the fifth seeds, drew level.
But it was Tesni Evans who clinched victory for the underdogs, beating Germany's Caroline Sayegh 11-6, 6-11, 11-7, 12-10.
Both teams go forward to the quarter-final play-offs – but Wales are drawn to face sixth seeds Switzerland, while Germany must beat Czech Republic, the No3 seeds, to have the chance of making the final for the second year in a row.
Top seeds England eased into the last eight play-offs following 3/0 wins in Pool A over both Finland and Scotland.
Second seeds France, bidding to make the final for the third time in the last four years, also won two victories in Pool B, but their 3/0 triumph over Hungary was followed by a 2/1 win over No7 seeds Netherlands after Dutchman Tim van der Pluijm claimed a five-game win over Arthur Moineau in the second string clash.
