While Egypt's Karim Abdel Gawad was the anticipated men's winner of the Greek Open Squash Championship in Athens, unseeded Nicolette Fernandes, from Guyana, confounded the seedings in the other event to win the women's title at the Athens Tennis & Squash Club.
Abdel Gawad, the 18-year-old top seed from Cairo, faced England's Mark Fuller in the final of the $3,750 PSA World Tour event after the fifth seed from Nottingham upset second-seeded Canadian Andrew McDougall in the quarter-finals.
Fuller's fortune ran out in the final, however, as Gawad extended his unbeaten run in the event by beating the Englishman 11-8, 11-9, 3-11, 11-6 to claim the third Tour title of his career.
Nicolette Fernandes is battling to recover the form she showed two years ago when she reached 27 in the world - since when the 26-year-old has been laid low by a knee injury.
But, after victories over seventh seed Laura Pomportes and fourth seed Adel Weir in the $4,000 WISPA World Tour event in Athens, Fernandes dismissed unseeded German Sina Wall to reach the second Tour final of her career.
Her opponent was Farah Abdel Meguid, an Egyptian qualifier who made her breakthrough after defeating Russia's third seed Irina Assal in the first round.
But Fernandes had to be at her best to topple the 17-year-old from Cairo, ultimately winning 11-7, 11-2, 6-11, 11-5 to claim the first WISPA Tour title of her career!
