Darwish Dashes Compatriot's Hopes In Islamabad Final
Appearing in their second PSA Tour final in Pakistan in four months, Karim
Darwish again beat fellow Egyptian Mohammed Abbas to win the $25,000 COAS
International Squash Championship in Islamabad.
Darwish, the favourite from Cairo who this month celebrated a career-high
world No11 ranking, cruised through the event without dropping a game. The
21-year-old former world junior champion despatched his experienced
compatriot Omar Elborolossy, the third seed, in the semi-finals before
defeating fifth-seeded Abbas 15-8 15-4 15-8 in the final to secure the sixth
PSA Tour title of his career.
Abbas, who lost to Darwish both in the CNS International final in Karachi in
September and in the World Universities Championship final earlier in the
year, reached the Islamabad final after upsetting second-seeded Pakistani
Mansoor Zaman in a four-game quarter-final. In the semis, the 22-year-old
world No37 took on Mansoor's cousin Farrukh Zaman, and ended local interest
in the event with a 15-7 17-14 15-14 victory over his unseeded opponent.
