German qualifier Patrick Gaessler upset the form book in the McWIL Dunlop Polish Open Squash Championship when he upset eighth seed Fabien Verseille to reach the quarter-finals of the first PSA Tour event ever to be staged in Poland.
The 22-year-old from Stuttgart swept to an 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 victory in 35 minutes at the SquashClub Stare Kino in Krakow.
Gaessler will now face Luca Mastrostefano for a place in the semi-finals after the third seed from Italy fought back from two games down to beat Ireland's Arthur Gaskin 5-11, 10-11 (4-6), 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 in 66 minutes.
Favourite Omar Abdel Aziz also had a fight on his hands to claim his anticipated place in the last eight. The top-seeded Egyptian defeated French qualifier Romain Tenant 8-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-10 (3-1) in 61 minutes to set up a quarter-final clash with England's No7 seed Jago Nardelli who overcame Egypt's Mohamed Elkeiy 11-9, 9-11, 11-2, 7-11, 11-9 in an 80-minute marathon.
