British Open Chooses NPFA As Official Charity

John Beddington, co-promoter of next month's British Open Squash Championships in Nottingham, has announced that The National Playing Fields Association (NPFA) has been selected as the event's 'Official Charity'.

The 2003 British Open will take place at the Albert Hall in Nottingham from 01-05 October, following qualifying rounds at Nottingham Squash Club.  Star-studded fields will be led by top seeds Peter Nicol and Carol Owens, the world number ones from England and New Zealand, respectively.

Elsa Davies, Director of the NPFA, is delighted that the charity will be linked in this way with the "Wimbledon of Squash":  "We are very pleased to be chosen as the official charity, because it highlights the way that sportspeople can help sport.  We don't have government funding, so the more sports organisations we can get to support us the better, to make sure that people have quality facilities to use," Davies added.

Beddington added:  "Despite the fact that squash is not played on playing fields, we felt strongly that the NPFA was exactly the sort of charity we wanted to help, and I hope that our association will ultimately raise significant funds for this vital cause."

Protecting and improving playing fields is the core work of the NPFA - the UK's only national organisation which has specific responsibility for acquiring, protecting and improving our fast disappearing playing fields and playgrounds.

"Recreational space is a vital part of every community," Elsa Davies added. "However, despite its importance, an average of one playing field every day comes under threat from building development. Once this land is built on, it's lost forever."

The 2003 British Open will feature 16-draw men's and women's events and a full programme of men's and women's Masters events.
