Mexican Jose Angel Becerril produced the only surprise on the opening day of the IX Abierto Colombian Squash Open when he upset third-seeded Frenchman Renan Lavigne in the first round of the 2-star PSA Tour event in Bogotá, Colombia.
Becerril, a 21-year-old qualifier from Mexico City, beat Lavigne 6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-6 in 40 minutes – and will now meet one of two Colombians through to the last eight. Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the No6 seed, despatched Australian Paul Davis 11-5, 11-6, 11-6.
The other Colombian will face his second Canadian in two days. Seventh seed Bernardo Samper beat Montreal-based Ian Power 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 – and will now face top seed Graham Ryding, the Canadian No1, who defeated Argentina's Roberto Pezzota 11-6, 11-9, 11-10 (2-0).
