Vicky In Vassar Victory Over Geaves
Vicky Botwright celebrated a second notable upset against a higher-ranked
English compatriot in the USA when she crushed third seed Fiona Geaves in
straight games to reach the semi-finals of the $18,000 Women's Vassar College
Class of 1932 Squash Open in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Two weeks ago, the 25-year-old world No18 from Manchester reached the final
of the Southport Open in Connecticut against the odds, after overcoming world
No12 Stephanie Brind in the semi-finals. Sixth-seeded Botwright's 9-3 9-1
9-6 win over Geaves in Poughkeepsie avenged her five-game loss to the world
No10 in last week's Greenwich Open, also in Connecticut.
Buoyed by her success on the eve of next month's British National
Championships in her home town Manchester - where she is drawn to meet
England's defending champion Cassie Jackman in the first round - Botwright
now meets the Vassar College Open's No2 seed Vanessa Atkinson. The Dutch No1
defeated fifth-seeded Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy 9-0 9-5 9-2.
