Camilleri Causes Adelaide Upset
Australia's Lisa Camilleri claimed a notable scalp in today's (Tuesday) quarter-finals of the women’s Australian Open Squash Championship when she upset second-seeded compatriot Melissa Martin in Adelaide.
It was the third successive early WISPA World Tour event exit for Martin, made worse for the world No30 who is playing a Tour event in her hometown for the first time for some years. Camilleri, the sixth seed from Queensland, won 9-6, 9-6, 4-9, 9-3 in 42 minutes in her first ever WISPA clash with her fellow Australian.
The 23-year-old will play fourth seed Dianne Desira in one of the two all-Australian semi-finals. Desira staged a mighty fight back to defeat Hong Kong's fifth seed Christina Mak 5-9, 1-9, 9-5, 9-2, 9-5 in a 95-minute marathon.
The other match will be a repeat of last season's Australian Open semi-final between Amelia Pittock and Kasey Brown which took place in January this year. Pittock, the top seed, avenged last week's South Australian Open first round upset by beating fellow Australian Donna Urquhart, the No8 seed, 9-4, 9-4, 9-3, while Brown dashed Sachiko Shinta's hopes of a place in the last four by crushing the No7 seed from Japan 9-0, 9-2, 9-1 in just 28 minutes.
