Malta Strike Double Squash Gold in Europe Games
Hosts Malta made a clean sweep of the singles gold medals in squash in
the 10th Games of the Small States of Europe with triumphs over Cypriots
in the men's and women's finals in Marsa.
Despite trailing 3-1 in the opening game, Malta-born Michael Fiteni quickly
came back to brush aside P Hadjiphilippou 9-3 9-0 9-1 in the men's final.
The other final was equally straightforward as Dianne Desira, a Maltese
resident for past two months, crushed V Karasavas 9-1 9-0 9-4 to take gold.
"I am really excited to be here," an elated Desira told The Times of Malta
afterwards. "This is the first time I have won a major honour and I am very
delighted. The final was not as tough as I had expected."
The Malta Times reported that Malta's double delight vindicated the MOC's
decision to approach Fiteni (based in the Netherlands) and Desira
(from Australia) to represent Malta in the GSSE. A smiling Pippo Psaila,
Malta's chef-de-mission, said their contribution stretched beyond the GSSE
gold medal.
"It was the right decision, not only because Fiteni and Desira have landed
gold, but more importantly because they helped to boost the level of our
players," Psaila told the newspaper.
