KNEIPP TO UNDERGO POWER TRAINING
Australia's world No12 Joe Kneipp is planning to make an assault on the
world's top 10 by training alongside Power this summer. Not Jonathon Power, the
current Commonwealth Games gold medallist and world No3, but his father John
Power, the head coach of Dartmouth College in the USA where the Power Squash
Academy is held over the summer.
According to Kneipp's website www.JoeKneipp.com, he will spend all of July
based at Dartmouth training alongside Power's camp. There were numerous factors
in Kneipp's decision to train at the Ivy League College. "Summer is always
very quiet for tournaments and leagues so it's a time to concentrate solely on
training," Kneipp said. "I live and train in Amsterdam, which is a wonderful
city with consistently poor weather. So during summer when it's a beautiful sunny
day the last thing you want to do is spend the day inside a squash court.
"So my coach Dan and I agreed that it would be better to go somewhere when we
can focus one hundred percent on squash and training and have fewer
distractions. We've trained at Dartmouth before and the mixture of great facilities and
a vibrant squash community make for excellent training conditions," Kneipp
added.
Although this is the 5th year that the Power Squash Academy has been held in
the States, it is the first time Joe Kneipp has been associated with it. The
Academy's director John Power said: "The Power Squash Academy is very excited
to have a world class player the likes of Joe Kneipp training at the Dartmouth
College courts while the Academy is in session. His day to day presence and
commitment to his training will be a huge motivator for not only the more than
one hundred young players who will be here throughout the month of July, but
also to the Dartmouth players who will be in residence for their sophomore
summer."
Although Kneipp won't be coaching as part of Power's Academy, he will be
involved. Power said: "At least once per week Joe will play or train with some of
the better players or coaching staff so that the kids can actually see him in
action. We haven't finalised the details yet but Jonathon will probably come
to the camp for a weekend and do an exhibition match with Joe."
Kneipp will be training at the camp with his coach and brother Dan.
"Typically Dan and I will be on court for two or three hours a day," Kneipp said. "We
will also be taking advantage of the other facilities at the college. There
are 10 international courts, including a show court that has three glass walls,
a weight training room, pool, all weather track and apparently some of the
most picturesque running and cycling routes. We'll also take our golf clubs and
tennis racquets. It should be a great month."
The Power Squash Academy has intensive training camps for competitive boys
and girls running from June 29 - July 18, followed by two one-week sessions for
juniors of all levels. There is an adult weekend from July 25-27.
