Ryan Leads Seeding Collapse In Qatar
Ireland's Derek Ryan led a seeding collapse in the quarter-finals of the
Qatar Squash Circuit Event No3 in Doha which resulted in only one player taking up
an anticipated place in the last four.
PSA Tour veteran Ryan, the seven-times Irish National champion who is the
eighth seed in Doha, twice had to come from behind to topple top-seeded Egyptian
Mohammed Essam Hafiz 4-15 15-10 13-15 17-14 15-6 in 63 minutes.
His semi-final opponent survived an even longer encounter. Seventh seed Joey
Barrington was 2-0 down before he mounted his winning campaign against fourth
seed Glenn Keenan, eventually beating the Australian 7-15 13-15 15-10 15-13
15-5 in 90 minutes.
England's fifth seed Alex Stait upset the form book in the lower half of the
draw when he defeated Pakistan's third seed Ajaz Azmat 15-10 15-12 11-15 15-8
in 52 minutes. His win takes him into a semi-final against Australia's Marcus
Smith.
The No2 seed was taken the full distance by French qualifier Laurent Elriani
but finally took his predicted place in the semi-finals with a 15-8 11-15
11-15 15-3 15-5 victory in 55 minutes.
