Wee Wins While Waters Wilts
Malaysia's Sharon Wee claimed her third WISPA World Tour title when she beat
England's surprise finalist Alison Waters in the final of the CJSquash.com
Hyder Women's Squash Open in New York, USA.
Wee, the top seed, completely dominated the first game against the eighth
seed who had upset two higher-ranked players to reach her first WISPA final.
After a timid and defensive first game, Waters came into the second showing
the same aggressiveness and power which she had demonstrated in dominating
Australia's sixth seed Amelia Pittock in the semi-finals. Though Wee took a
5-1 lead, Waters fought back to take the game and level the match with a
series of deep drives and precise drops that seemed to put Wee off her
balance.
The third game was always going to be pivotal. Wee opened up a 7-3 lead, but
Waters, the recently-crowned British junior champion, drew level. After Wee
moved onto game ball at 8-7, it took nine further rallies before the
Malaysian clinched the game to move ahead 2/1.
Wee seemed to know that her younger opponent was on the ropes, and took the
opportunity to serve out the game on an impressive string of dominating
rallies - ultimately clinching a 9-0 5-9 9-7 9-2 victory.
