Castagnet Captures Quarter-Final Place In Barcelona
French qualifier Mathieu Castagnet caused the biggest upset on the opening day's play in the Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona Squash Open when he defeated England's seventh seed Tom Richards 11-10 11-8 4-11 8-11 11-8 in a marathon first round match in the Spanish city.
Castagnet, the 18-year-old from Le Mans who won a year's membership of the PSA after ending last season as No1 in the European Squash Federation junior rankings, will now take on Bermuda's fourth seed Nicholas Kyme - who overcame Sweden's Badr Abdel Aziz 8-11 11-9 5-11 11-6 11-10 in another dramatic five-game encounter which went to the wire.
Welsh qualifier Rob Sutherland also earned a place in the last eight after fighting back from two games down to upset France's eighth seed Romain Tenant 10-11 6-11 11-6 11-9 11-4. The 20-year-old from Newport now meets top seed Davide Bianchetti, the Italian who defeated Germany's Simon Rosner 11-4 11-5 11-10.
