Ryding Roasted As Anjema Advances In Cairo
Laurens Jan Anjema became the second qualifier to claim a place in the quarter-finals of the Rotary Heliopolis Open Squash Championship when he upset third-seeded Canadian Graham Ryding in four games in the first round of the 4-star PSA Tour event at the Heliopolis Club in Cairo.
Dutchman Anjema, 22, from The Hague, defeated the world No13 from Toronto 11-4 11-9 4-11 11-6 to set up a last eight clash with sixth seed Mohammed Abbas, one of four Egyptians fighting for places in the semi-finals. Abbas beat compatriot Sherif Moustafa Kamel 11-3 11-2 11-5.
England's unseeded Peter Barker also claimed a surprise place in the quarter-finals after upsetting seventh-seeded compatriot Bradley Ball 11-10 11-6 11-3.
Barker celebrated a career-high No23 world ranking this month after winning two PSA Tour titles over the past six weeks. The 21-year-old from Upminster in Essex now faces second seed Karim Darwish, the world No12 from Cairo who beat England's Joey Barrington 11-9 11-5 11-5.
