Darwish Delights In Fourth Pakistan Win
Egypt's Karim Darwish claimed his fourth successive PSA Tour title in
Pakistan when he beat compatriot Amr Shabana in the final of the $25,000
Pakistan Circuit Event No2 in Lahore.
The top-seeded former world junior champion had a relatively untroubled route
through to the semi-final where he faced Omar Elborolossy, a former Egyptian
No1. Elborolossy prevailed when the pair met a year ago in the Maadi Open
final in their home town of Cairo - but Darwish repeated the straight games
win he achieved over his local rival at the same stage of the first Pakistan
circuit event in Islamabad in January with a 15-12 15-12 15-7 win to take him
into the final against another Cairo-based colleague.
Shabana, the third seed, reached the final after fighting back from 2-0 down
to upset local hero Mansoor Zaman, the second seed, 6-15 7-15 15-8 15-6 15-9
in the other semi-final.
In the final, Darwish raced to a 15-12 15-7 6-2 lead against his Egyptian
team-mate when Shabana forfeited the match as a result of an injury in his
left heel.
"The pain started during the semi-final against Mansoor Zaman, but it was not
so severe then," 23-year-old Shabana told Pakistan's Dawn newspaper
afterwards. "I took a risk for the final, but the pain did not let me
continue."
The win brings Darwish's PSA Tour title tally to seven - the last three being
the COAS International in Islamabad, the CNS International in Karachi and the
Pak-Telecom International in Lahore a year ago.
