Het Nederlandse damesteam is bij het EK voor teams als tweede geƫindigd.
In de finale verloor Oranje met 1-2 van Engeland, dat voor de 26ste keer
op rij de titel voor zich opeiste. Het Engelse team heeft slechts twee maal
eerder in de geschiedenis een nederlaag geleden, in 1988 voor het laatst
tegen Ierland.
Vanessa Atkinson zorgde voor het enige Nederlandse punt door Cassie Jackman
in een spannend duel te verslaan met 3-1. Atkinson won de eerste met 9-4 maar
moest de tweede afstaan met 3-9. In de vierde stond Atkinson met 3-5 achter
en scoorde punten tot matchball, maar Jackman kwam toch terug tot 8-8. Atkinson
kwam op de tweede matchball op 9-9, Jackman kwam in de problemen na de pickup
van een mooie drop van Atkinson, Jackman was niet op tijd weg terwijl Atkinson
klaar stond om de bal te spelen. Hierdoor won Atkinson met een stroke de
wedstrijd.
Vorige maand had ze in de finale van de Irisch Open na een slopende vijfsetter
ook van Jackman gewonnen. Atkinson zei aan die partij te hebben teruggedacht:
"Ik heb geleerd mezelf te bedwingen en het niet te snel te willen afmaken".
