England & Netherlands In European Final
In a repeat of the 1998 final, top seeds and defending champions England will
face second seeds Netherlands in the final of the 2003 European Junior Team
Squash Championships after both claimed 2/1 victories in the semi-finals in
Parsdorf, Germany.
England, unbeaten in the finals since the first year of the competition in
1984, were made to fight all the way by unexpected semi-finalists France, the
fifth seeds. Laurence Delasaux, the England No1 junior who was runner-up in
the individual competition, needed five games to overcome France's Yann
Perrin, whom he beat in straight games in the earlier event's semi-finals.
After the Humberside teenager clambered to his 7-9 9-6 9-3 8-10 9-7 win,
team-mate Suzie Pierrepont, fresh from winning the women's individual title,
secured England's place in their 20th successive final with a 9-6 9-1 9-1 win
over Maud Duplomb. France claimed a consolation point in the dead rubber
when Johann Bouquet fought back from a game down to defeat Tom Richards 6-9
9-0 9-0 in the best-of-three match.
Newly-crowned men's European champion Dylan Bennett steered Netherlands to
only their second ever appearance in the final by beating Wales No1 Rob
Sutherland 9-6 9-1 4-9 9-7 in the opening match. Orla Noom clinched victory
with a 9-0 9-4 9-0 win over Wales' Stacey Preece before Jethro Binns restored
Welsh pride with a 9-3 9-0 win over Tom Hoevenaars in the third string
encounter.
