English Suffer Significant European Junior Upsets
Two English players expected to reach the quarter-finals of the European
Junior Squash Championships crashed out in the second round of the men's
event in Parsdorf, Germany.
5/6 seed Chris Simpson, the British U-17 National champion from Guernsey, was
beaten 9-6 1-9 10-8 9-5 by Germany's unseeded Simon Rosner while Denmark's
Michael Frilund ended 7/8 seed James Wright's run in an unexpected 9-7 9-5
9-5 defeat.
Whilst all the women's second round matches went according to the seedings,
there were two further upsets in the men's event. Hosts Germany gained a
second surprise player through to the third round when unseeded Matthias
Maierhofer beat France's 13/16 seed Johann Bouquet 9-7 10-9 9-5, and Dutchman
Maarten van Bavel removed Switzerland's 13/16 seed Manuel Grima 9-4 3-9 10-8
9-7.
