Fighting back from a serious knee injury in 2003, Teran entered last month's Atlanta Masters and Calgary Open unseeded - but reached the quarter-finals of the latter and the last four of the former before arriving in Florida. The 23-year-old from Mexico City made her breakthrough in Boca Raton when she toppled top seed Heidi Mather in the quarter-finals. Victory over Canada's Katie Patrick, the fourth seed, took Teran into the final against Miller, who had upset England's No2 seed Vicky Hynes in the other semi. Teran was on top for the first two games of the final and raced to a 2/0 lead. But in the third and fourth games, she began to tire and this allowed Miller's reach, drops and kill shots to become more effective. The Canadian went 6-1 ahead in the fifth, but was unable to hold this advantage as Teran fought back to draw level at 7-7 and then went 8-7 for match ball. Alana managed to stave off two match points before losing the match on a stroke to give Teran a notable 9-4 9-3 3-9 0-9 9-7 victory. |
