German qualifiers Simon Rösner and Simon Baker crashed out to England's eighth seed Mark Heather and Egyptian favourite Omar Elborolossy, respectively, while National champion Stefan Leifels lost 15-12 15-6 17-16 to Canada's 14th seed Matthew Giuffre - who now faces Elborolossy. English players were involved in three upsets in the opening round of the first German Open on the PSA Tour for 12 years. In the longest match of the day, unseeded Stacey Ross twice came from behind to overwhelm Switzerland's ninth seed Lars Harms 15-17 15-6 13-15 15-10 15-4 in 96 minutes. The Surrey 30-year-old, who last week reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Open unseeded, now faces tenth-seeded compatriot Alister Walker for a place in the last eight. But England's seventh seed Lee Drew and 16th seed Scott Handley failed to reach their anticipated places in the second round after falling to Pakistan's Khayal Muhammad and Sweden's Christian Drakenberg, respectively. In the qualifying finals for the women's event, Japan's Chinatsu Matsui upset Ivy Pochoda of the USA in straight games, and will now face England's top seed Laura-Jane Lengthorn in the first round.
