Ross Romps To Dutch Open Quarters

England's Stacey Ross robbed eighth seed Glenn Keenan of his chance of appearing in the quarter-finals of the Dutch Open Squash Championships when he upset the Australian in straight games in the opening round of the men's event at the Caesar Sports Club in The Hague.

The 30-year-old from Surrey, enjoying a successful return to the PSA Tour after a number of years away from the sport, beat Keenan 15-10 15-11 15-3 and now faces local hero Tommy Berden for a place in the semi-finals.

Berden, the reigning Dutch National champion and the event's second seed, struggled to find his form in his opener - taking five games to overcome English qualifier Andrew Whipp 15-7 15-10 9-15 13-15 15-13.  "It was a narrow escape for the Dutch number one," conceded Berden, the world No34 from Almere, afterwards.

The women's Dutch No1 Vanessa Atkinson had no such problems as she swept to a straight games win over Belgian qualifier Kim Hannes-Teunen.  Playing on her home courts, second seed Atkinson despatched her opponent 9-6 9-2 9-4 to set up a quarter-final clash with sixth seed Latasha Khan, the US National champion who beat England's Rebecca Botwright 9-1 9-0 9-3.

All the top eight women's seeds survived their first round obstacles - though an upset looked on the cards when England's unseeded Laura Lengthorn forced the match against local star Annelize Naude, the No8 seed, into a fifth game.  At nine-all in the decider, Naude served into the back wall nick to clinch a fortunate 2-9 9-6 9-2 6-9 10-9 victory.
