Kheirallah, the 22-year-old from Alexandria ranked 15 places below, defeated the 5th seed 9-4 9-6 9-6 to take her unexpected place in the quarter-finals. The Ambassador was also able to enjoy further Egyptian success when fourth seed Omneya Abdel Kawy, the world junior champion from Cairo, dismissed Australian qualifier Melissa Martin 9-1 9-6 9-1. There was the hint of a similarly-inspired upset when Pakistan's unseeded Carla Khan faced third-seeded Englishwoman Vicky Botwright. Buoyed by the support of a delegation from the Pakistan embassy, Khan forced the match into a fourth game, but Botwright ultimately claimed a 9-4 9-6 9-10 9-4 victory in the longest and most dramatic clash of the night. Despite the lack of any visible British embassy presence, Scotland's Pamela Nimmo upset Malaysia's 7th seed Sharon Wee 7-9 9-2 10-8 9-2 to guarantee British interest in the final on Sunday. Nimmo earns a quarter-final clash with England's top seed Linda Charman, the 9-0 9-0 9-0 victor over Canadian qualifier Alana Miller, and the winner goes through to a semi-final against either Botwright or Stephanie Brind, both from England.
