England’s Emma Beddoes claimed a surprise place in the semi-finals of the women’s NSC Series No1 in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur when she upset third-seeded Malaysian Sharon Wee in today’s (Thursday) quarter-finals of the $16,000 WISPA World Tour event at the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil.

The 23-year-old world No38 from Nottingham defeated Wee 11-7, 13-11, 11-9 in just 27 minutes - and will now face second seed Annie Au for a place in the final.

The 20-year-old from Hong Kong also overcame a local player, beating seventh seed Low Wee Wern 11-9, 11-8, 11-3.

Malaysian interest in the women’s event will now rest solely on the shoulders of Delia Arnold, the fourth seed who beat England’s No5 seed Lauren Siddall 18-16, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6.  Arnold will take on New Zealand’s top seed Shelley Kitchen in the other semi.

Upsets continued in the men’s $10,000 PSA Tour event.  Kuwaiti qualifier Abdullah Almezayen, who beat England's fourth seed Chris Simpson in the first round, continued his impressive run by taking out Matthew Karwalski, the No8 seed from Australia, 11-7, 11-6, 11-9.

The 21-year-old, ranked 120 in the world, will now face second seed Mohd Ali Anwar Reda, the world No53 from Egypt who defeated Malaysian Muhd Asyraf Azan 11-8, 11-9, 11-9.

Nicolas Mueller will also take an unexpected place in the semi-finals.  The unseeded Swiss teenager beat Pakistan qualifier Waqar Mehboob 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 to set up a meeting with top seed Aaron Frankcomb.

The Australian defeated Scottish qualifier Alan Clyne 11-4, 11-9, 9-11, 11-4.
