India’s Joshna Chinappa and Frenchman Stephane Galifi triumphed in today’s (Friday) finals of the NSC Super Squash Satellite No3 - against expectations - at the Bukit Jalil National Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Remarkably, fourth seed Galifi won the men’s title without having to overcoming a higher-seeded opponent. The 30-year-old from Aix-en-Provence brushed aside seventh-seeded local hero Ivan Yuen (who beat favourite Mike Corren in the previous round) then another Malaysian Kamran Khan in the final.
Khan, a qualifier, upset the second, third and fifth seeds to make the climax – but the 18-year-old from KL was no match for the Frenchman as Galifi romped to a 11-3, 11-2, 11-3 triumph in 22 minutes.
The win marked Galifi’s third PSA Tour title in a row – and his fourth of the year.
Joshna Chinappa made her breakthrough in the women’s semi-finals, beating local favourite Sharon Wee in four games. In the final, the 22-year-old from Chennai beat rising Malaysian star Low Wee Wern, the 18-year-old sixth seed 11-8, 11-5, 11-3.
