Spanish favourite Borja Golan needed almost an hour to fight off the challenge of Malaysian Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan in the final of the Winnipeg Building & Decorating Manitoba Open to win the $15,000 PSA Tour squash event in its fifth year at Winnipeg Squash Racquet Club in Winnipeg in the Canadian province of Manitoba.
Adnan, the 21-year-old sixth seed competing in his first event in North America, caused a significant upset in the semi-finals when he removed second-seeded Canadian Shawn Delierre - thus leaving the final without local interest for the first time in its five years as a PSA Tour event.
But Golan, the 25-year-old world No24 from Santiago DC - ranked 67 places higher than his opponent - rushed to a two-game lead over the Malaysian before Adnan fought back to take the third game.
It was all to no avail, however, as the Spaniard reclaimed control of the encounter to close out the match 11-3, 11-6, 7-11, 11-6.
The triumph marks Golan's first Tour title of the year - but the 16th of his career, from 20 final appearances.
