Badr Bursts Into Second Successive World Championship Semi
Egypt’s Sara Badr fought back from 1/2 down against Belgium’s Charlie de Rycke to upset the third seed 9-7 2-9 0-9 9-1 9-3 to claim a surprise place in the semi-finals of the Women's World Junior Squash Championship for the second successive time.
It was two years ago in her home country that the 18-year-old from Alexandria – also then seeded only to reach the last eight – battled past compatriot Raneem El Weleily to reach the semi-finals against the odds.
Badr will again face the top seed for a place in the final – this year it is India’s Joshna Chinappa, who achieved her fourth straight games win in a row in Herentals when she beat Hong Kong’s Joey Chan 9-6 9-6 9-7.
The other semi-final will feature Raneem El Weleily, the second seed, and fourth seed Tenille Swartz. Egypt’s El Weleily ended the run of USA’s Lily Lorentzen, beating the 5/8 seed 9-7 9-5 9-4, while South African Swartz defeated Egypt’s 9/16 seed Nehal Yehia 9-2 9-2 9-3.
