Shawn Stems Simpson Surge In Houston
Canada’s fourth seed Shawn De Lierre resisted a fight back by Chris Simpson to overcome the English qualifier 11-8 8-11 5-11 11-6 11-7 in 70 minutes in a thrilling first round match in the Sanders Morris Harris Houston Open Squash Championship at the Downtown Club in Houston, Texas.
Toronto-based De Lierre, 23, now faces fellow north American Beau River, the seventh seed from the USA who needed 40 minutes to beat ‘lucky loser’ Canadian Patrick Bedore, a last-minute replacement for Michael Puertas, 11-6 11-7 11-10.
After surviving two rounds of qualifiers against the odds, Downtown Club Pro Muhammad Sadiq met his match against the top seed in the main draw. But ’s Phillip Barker had to toil for 65 minutes before beating his Pakistan-born opponent 11-2 11-9 9-11 11-7.
