Nicol Desperate To Win Crucible Crown

 

Squash legend Peter Nicol has set his sights on securing the one tournament for which he works harder than any other…

 

The Mamut English Open, hosted by Sheffield City Council, is organised by Nicol’s company Eventis Sports Marketing.  It means the former world number one has more to do than just prepare for action at the Crucible Theatre in August.

 

“My role is definitely more than turn up and play,” said Nicol.  “But my two business partners, Tim Garner and Angus Kirkland, ensure that I have as good a preparation as possible for my matches.

 

“It’s a tournament I am desperate to win and have been disappointed over the last two years not to at least reach the final.”

 

Disappointment for Nicol maybe, but surprise for squash fans that Nicol has yet to claim to the trophy. Such has been his dominance of the sport over a sustained period, there are few major trophies left for the England international to win.

 

Indeed, victory at the Crucible would mark the 50th Tour title for the Englishman who last year celebrated his 60th month at the top of the world rankings.

 

With the tournament coming at the beginning of the season, it could explain Nicol’s quarter final exit in 2003 and his semi final loss last year.

 

“Players are still finding their feet in August, that’s for sure,” said Nicol, aged 32.  “It makes for an exciting tournament though, because anyone can beat anyone.  Last year Simon Parke came out of nowhere to reach the final and only lost because Lee Beachill was in such excellent form.”

 

Now ranked five in the world, Nicol is confident he can make an impression this year. “I love coming to Sheffield and playing in the glass court at the Crucible.  The organisational side of the tournament is something I enjoy as well.  The only thing missing is a piece of silverware at the end of the week.  Maybe this year is the one.”

 

Now in its third year, the $45,000 Mamut English Open is a four star international PSA Tour event which will attract the world's top squash players to the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, Yorkshire - the renowned home of the World Snooker Championships - from 17-21 August.
