Ryding Back On Winner's Podium In Quebec

Canada's Graham Ryding ended an eight-year PSA Tour title drought when he beat compatriot Matthew Giuffre in the final of the Quebec Open Squash Championship at the Club Sportif MAA in Montreal, Canada.

Top seed Ryding, ranked 14th in the world, triumphed 11-7 8-11 11-6 11-6 over Giuffre to earn his first Professional Squash Association tournament victory since 1996, and seventh overall in 16 career finals.

"I never felt comfortable most of this tournament," said Ryding, a three-time national champion and the 1999 Pan Am Games gold medallist, who struggled in his first and second round victories before eliminating Viktor Berg of Vancouver in three straight games in the semi-final.

"I was playing not to lose rather than win.  But tonight I wasn't as cautious and played a lot more aggressively," explained the 29-year-old from Toronto, a Director of the PSA.

Fourth seed Giuffre, from Edmonton and ranked 50th in the world, won his quarter-final and semi-final matches in five-game marathons - upsetting second seed Joey Barrington of England in the semis of the $10,000 PSA Tour event.
